GEEJAY ARRIOLA
conceptualist, artistic director, composer-arranger, vocals, guitar, percussion
has been a music composer and performer for various plays of Kaliwat Theatre Collective since 1988. Geejay played music with Popong Landero in 1995-1996, became a member of the National Performing Team of the Asian Council for Peoples Culture in 1999, and co-founded the all-women musical storytelling group Mebuyan Peace Project in 2000. Her two major music-writing experiences are for the theatre production Mindasilang (2000) by Kaliwat Theatre Collective where she wrote 8 of 17 songs, and Mebuyan Peace Project's Panaw (2002) where she wrote all the songs. Geejay has performed lead roles in Panaw (Mebuyan Peace Project, 2002-03), Pitong Ritwal ng Inang Lupa (ACPC-Tent, 1999-2001), Mindasilang (Kaliwat Theatre Collective, 1999-2000), Oya, Arakan (Kaliwat, 1994-95), and Lemafeu sa Habagatan (Kaliwat, 1992-94). ARNEL MARDOQUIO
playwright-librettist
is a playwright, poet, storyteller, theatre director, actor, and lyricist. He recently won the Palanca (2003) for Short Story in Cebuano. Within 17 years as a playwright, Arnel has written several plays, including the following major productions: Tanod ng Dayuhang Agila (KAFI, 1986), Bulawan (KAFI, 1986), Bakwiter (KAFI, 1987), Adlaw Bulan (KAFI, 1988), Tagay (KAFI, 1989), Siak sa Duha Ka Damgo (Kaliwat Theatre Collective, 1991), Tulo ka Baye (1990), Noli Me Tangere sa Entablado (1992), Birds' Flight to the East (Asian Migrants Theatre Company, HK 2001), and Taytayan (2003). POPONG LANDERO
music director, composer-arranger, vocals, guitar, percussion
sang his own songs in his teenage years, co-founded the music group Masang Himig, quit school and survived solely on his music. He is known in Davao as the "Kaliweteng Gitarista" (left-handed guitarist), a recognition he earned in 1978 after his song "Kaliweteng Gitarista" sweeped the airwaves in Davao. Popong exchanged musical notes with ASIN, and the pioneering reggae-rock band Lolita and Sulabama in 1981. Years later he founded Prisoners of the Worldbank (POW), and became one of the original members of Bagong Lumad. Popong has four music albums to his creditAyayayayay, Laylay sa Sidlakan, Kamaynilaan, Impact 2000all produced in Mindanao, except for one. He has been musical director for many, many theatre productions in Mindanao. In 2000, he founded his own band Popong Landero Org (PLO). GAUSS OBENZA
music director, composer-arranger, vocals, guitar, percussion, flute
took mathematics in university and ended up with a robust 14-year career in music. She joined the now defunct Kulturang Atin Foundation, Inc. (KAFI) as musician for several of KAFI's plays, joined Kathara Dance Theatre Collective (1993) and Kaliwat Theatre Collective (1994). In 1996 she helped set up Bagaylan Women's Quartet, an all-women music theatre group and Seventh Heaven, now one of the most prestigious local jazz bands in Davao. Gauss was musical director for the International Women's Day Concerts in Davao City (1996, 1997) and set up 4Elements, an all-women band. In 2002 she set up her own musical act with Gauss and Guys. GARY GRANADA
composer, lab production facilitator
is one of the Philippines' most popular and excellent songwriters. His two decades of songwriting would mark Gary Granada as probably the most prolific Filipino songwriter in this century, having written over 300 songs and produced numerous albums, including 25 albums for his indie label Backdoor Records. His music awards are equally numerous, the most recent of which was the song "Mabuti Pa Sila," grand prize awardee in the 1998 Metropop Song Festival. Gary also won the 1988 KBP Musicfest with the social-conscience-stirring "Bahay," and again the 1984 Metropop for the song "Salamat, Salamat Musika." In 1989, the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Songwriting Contest awarded the top prize to Gary's "Earthkeeper." Gary wrote the libretto and music for the rock opera Lean in 1996, first staged at the UP Theatre in 1997. He is the master behind the it single "Pag Nanananalo/Pag Natatalo ang Ginebra." ERIC GANCIO

is the other half of the erstwhile musical phenomenon YANO. He was founding member of an acoustic school-based band Huni (1985), musician, music composer, and music director for several KAFI plays, music pool for PETA's Ramayana and Sakay. Eric is currently working on his first solo album. |
EUGENE VILLARINO

was session keyboard player for the ASIN reunion concert in Cebu in 1983, one of the original members of Bagong Lumad, and is currently a solo folk singer, and a member of PLO. |
ICOY SAN PEDRO
composer-arranger, vocals, percussion
did the pub rounds in Davao and Manila as folk singer from 1974 to 1980. From Manila he came home to become music teacher for children of ex-detainees and former NPA guerillas in 1984-85, and joined the alternative band Prisoners of the Worldbank (POW). From 1986-92 he was musical director, trainor and musician for various Kulturang Atin Foundation, Inc. (KAFI) plays. He currently plays blues music as a solo performer and with Trigo Project. |
MAREE CONTAOI
composer-arranger, vocals, guitar, percussion
took fine arts in college, was drummer for a college all-women band, and is now a folk singer. In 2002 she went to Canada on a 6-month stint with the Kathara Dance Theatre Collective. Maree is a member of the all-women Mebuyan Peace Project. |
MAAN CHUA
composer-arranger, lead role, vocals
is a 19-year old folk singer who sings and strums her own guitar in various bars and pubs in Davao City. She was vocalist of Skambugs band in 2001, and is performer for Mebuyan Peace Project, toured India, and participated in the Asia-Pacific Festival for Women in the Arts in Manila. "Salima" is her first acting performanceand in a lead rolein a theatre production. |

is a multi-instrumentalist playing bass, keyboard, percussions, drums, and guitar for various musical bands including Seventh Heaven and Gauss and Guys. His musical influences include R&B, jazz, and rock. Paolo teaches guitar and music at the Conpinco in Davao City. |

trained under Japanese lightswoman Naomi Matsumo, Kaikai Lamanilao is Lighting Designer of Mebuyan Peace Project and performer of Kaliwat Theatre Collective. Soon after lighting her first major production, Panaw with Mebuyan, Kaikai proceeded to light Kaliwat's performance productions. She assisted Naomi Matsumo in the humongous, multi-million dance-and-music theatre Darna, a production of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
