New Musicals and Revivals at the CCP

Music theater buffs will be treated to an array of new musicals and revivals in "Ikatlong Tagpo: 2004 National Theater Festival" on November 17-20, 2004 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and various associate venues.

Tanghalang Pilipino's hit musical version "Himala" by National Artist for Film Ishmael Bernal, on Nov. 7, 8 PM at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (TAT) features May Bayot, Dulce, Isay Alvarez and the TP's Actor's Company. Direction by Soxie Topacio, libretto by Ricky Lee and music by Vince de Jesus.

The City Arts and Culture Office of Calbayog City premieres "Biringan" on Nov. 9, 2 PM & 7:30 PM at the CCP TAT. "Biringan" is a dance and music theater piece on environmental issues and myths. Libretto by Pet Labro, music by Lucien Letaba, choreography by Denisa Reyes and direction by Jonas Lim.

Laguna Cultural Network premieres "Isko Iska" on Nov. 11, 10 AM & 3 PM at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute (THB). "Isko Iska" is a yearly student vaudeville that has become a tradition in the UP Los Baños community.

The world-renowned Loboc Children's Choir brings to life age-old musical traditions of the gozos, altars, flores, hugos and bolimbomkingking in the premiere of "Calenda de Loboc" (Calendar of Loboc) on Nov. 11, 2 PM & 7:30 PM at the CCP TAT. Direction and dramaturgy is by Lutgardo Labad and musical direction by Alma Fernando Taldo.

Cebu Independent Music Theater Company and the University of Cebu presents the premiere of "Tipik as Panahon" (Fragments of Time) on Nov. 12, 10 AM & 3 PM, at the CCP THB. Written by Ross Salvano and directed by Orlan Magno, "Tipik sa Panahon" is a musical revue of songs by prolific composer and librettist Lucien Letaba.

Tanghalang Hulyo 23 and Alyansa Inc. presents the premiere of "Titser ng Bayan" (Teacher of the People) on Nov. 14, 3 PM & 8 PM at CCP THB. "Titser ng Bayan" is a musical drama on the enduring visions of teachers Teodoro Asedillo, Juan Feleo, Perigrico Taruc and Theresa Almazan. Based on the book by Eric Torres. Written by Glecy Atienza, with music by Roberto Mendoza and choreography and direction by Anthony Cruz.

Araw Theater Ensemble with Alyansa Inc presents the premiere of "Pataya, Patihaya" (The Numbers Game) on Nov. 16, 10 AM & 3 PM, at the CCP THB. Written by Glecy Atienza, with music by Roberto Mendoza and direction by Erick Castro.

"Hudhud: Ifugao Epic Chant" on Nov. 18, 10 AM & 3 PM, at the CCP THB features the multi-ethnic vocal ensemble of the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music. In original Ifugao with English supertitles, the theatrical version of the Hudhud is directed by Anton Juan.

Dulaang UP brings back to the stage "Hibik at Himagsik nina Victoria Laktaw" (Plaint and Revolt of Victoria Lactaw and Comrades) on Nov.16, 2 PM & 7:30 PM at the CCP TAT. "Hibik" is a sarswela inspired by the story of feisty Batangueñas who take matters into their own hands during the war against American colonialism. Direction by Alex Cortez, libretto by Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, music by Lucien Letaba and set design by National Artist Salvador Bernal.

The Kaliwat Theater Collective presents "Oya Arakan!" on November 18, 6 PM at the Tanghalang Francisco Balagtas (Folk Arts Theater). "Oya Arakan!" is a concert documentary telling the story of a Manobo warrior who marries a Christian. Directed by Nestor Horfilla and Al Santos, "Oya Arakan!" features the music of Popong Landero, Titing Trinquite, Geejay Arriola, Buddie Dizon, Richard Belar and Kariala Etniko.

Gawad CCP Para Sa Sining awardee Barasaoin Kalinangan Foundation Inc presents "Nang Mabasag ang Banga" (When the Pot Broke) on Nov. 19, 7 :30 PM and Nov. 20, 2 PM at the CCP TAT. This musical is based on the romance of Amado Hernandez, poet and revolutionary journalist, and his wife Atang de la Rama, queen of Kundiman. Written by Sonny Cristobal, directed by Armand Sta. Ana with music by Arnel del Rosario.

"Salima", on Nov. 20, 6 PM, at the TFB, is a repeat of the hit rock concert musical of the Mindanao Theater Festival 2003. Presented by the Earth Music Foundation of Davao, "Salima" is a tale of war and peace in Mindanao seen from the eyes of a child. Directed by Geejay Arriola, Salima features the musical direction of Gauss Obenza and libretto by Arnel Mardoquio.

"Ikatlong Tagpo: The 2004 National Theater Festival" is a presentation of the CCP in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the NCCA Committee on Dramatic Arts and the UNESCO International Theater Institute.
